What is the difference between eternity and wedding rings?

Q: We are looking at rings for marriage… and all the ones I like say eternity ring… does this mean it is not acceptable to have this as my wedding ring?

A: Traditionally you get an eternity ring after you first child is born to signify that you and your partner will be together for an eternity, but don’t let this stop you, who’s going to be able to tell the difference really? If you fall in love with a ring even if it says eternity ring, don’t let it stop you buying it, buy it anyway, you can get a different eternity ring after your first child is born if you so wish. You don’t need a wedding band for a wedding ring, buy the ring you fall in love with, ignore tradition.
The History of Eternity Rings
Throughout history the concept of the eternity ring, to symbolize somebody’s everlasting love and devotion, can be seen in many traditions. The first example of this dates as far back as 2000 BC. The circle is a perfect symbol for eternal love, as it has no beginning and no end.
Eternity rings are stone set, often with diamonds. A ‘full eternity’ ring has stones set completely around the shank, whereas a ‘half eternity’ only has them halfway round. Some couples have ‘half eternity’ rings for practical purposes – ‘full eternity’ rings cannot be easily adjusted, and can be uncomfortable to wear because of the depth of the shank between the fingers.
Because of their beauty, endurance and expense, diamonds are the most popular gemstones for eternity rings, as symbolizing the permanence and commitment of the relationship. However rubies, sapphires, emeralds and other stones are also popular, usually in conjunction with diamonds.
Square-cut stones tend to be a popular choice for eternity rings, because they can be set edge-to-edge in a continuous band or line.
Some eternity rings are multi-stranded or plaited to symbolize unity.
How Long Is An Eternity?
There are widely varying opinions as to when is the appropriate time for giving and receiving an eternity ring.
Traditionally, they are given at the birth of the first child or at a suitably significant anniversary, often with diamonds and the anniversary stone used in combination. Some couples choose to exchange them on their first anniversary.
They are usually worn on the third finger of the left hand, with the engagement and wedding ring. “
